For decades, churches have invested heavily in youth groups, youth pastors, retreats, games, events, and programs designed specifically for teenagers. But there is a harder question worth asking:

Is the modern youth-ministry model actually producing mature Christian adults?

In this episode of A Lot of Words, Pastor Brett Schoeneck and Pastor Matt Smith examine youth culture and the church’s approach to discipling teenagers.

Matt doesn’t argue that youth groups are sinful or inherently unbiblical. His concern is that churches can unintentionally reproduce the same age segregation teenagers already experience throughout the rest of their lives—surrounding young people almost exclusively with peers who have roughly the same amount of life experience.

Christian discipleship, he argues, should look different.

Teenagers need older believers whose lives they can observe. They need to see Christians walking through marriage, parenthood, suffering, illness, aging, failure, forgiveness, and faithfulness. Older Christians, in turn, need relationships with younger believers. The church should function as a family rather than a collection of isolated demographic groups.

The conversation also turns directly toward parents. With teenagers spending enormous amounts of time online, they are constantly being influenced by friends, algorithms, influencers, entertainment, pornography, identity movements, advertising, and social media. The question isn’t simply whether young people are being discipled—it’s who is discipling them.

Matt argues that parents cannot outsource that responsibility to a youth pastor. Children need to see their parents reading Scripture, praying, serving others, admitting when they’re wrong, experiencing God’s grace, and living a genuine Christian faith at home.

Brett and Matt also discuss what happens when teenagers become skeptical or openly reject Christianity, whether parents should still require them to attend church, how families should approach smartphones and social media, and why churches should give young Christians meaningful opportunities to participate and serve.

The episode ultimately challenges both churches and parents to raise the bar for young Christians rather than simply trying to keep them entertained.

And because this is A Lot of Words, the episode somehow begins with Genesis, the biblical firmament, Satan potentially resembling a dragon—and the deeply pressing theological question of whether Adam and Eve farted before the Fall.
